Dionela, IV of Spades, and SB19 were the biggest names of the night at the 39th Awit Awards, held September 15 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. Organized by the Philippine Association of the Record Industry (PARI) with Go Live Asia, this year's edition was billed as the biggest staging of the Awit Awards yet, and the first one opened to the public.
Dionela takes the most trophies
Dionela walked away with four awards, all for "Ikigai," his collaboration with Loonie. The track won Best Collaboration, Best Rap/Hip-Hop Recording, and Best R&B Recording, while Dionela also picked up Best Vocal Arrangement. Few songs have crossed genre lines this cleanly, and the Awit voters clearly noticed.
IV of Spades sweeps the top prizes
IV of Spades claimed the night's two biggest honors. Andalucia won Album of the Year and "Aura" took Song of the Year, cementing the band's return as one of the defining stories in OPM right now. The group added a third trophy, Best Sound Engineered Recording, for "Monster."
SB19 rules pop with "DUNGKA!"
SB19's "DUNGKA!" won Best Pop Recording, Best Dance/Electronic Recording, and Best Music Video, directed by Kerbs Balagtas. Group leader Pablo also shared Songwriter of the Year honors with RADKIDZ.
Other big winners
fitterkarma won Record of the Year for "Pag-ibig ay Kanibalismo II," and 20-year-old Nicole was named Best New Artist on the strength of "Panaginip." Janine Berdin earned two awards, and Project Yazz also took home two. Ben&Ben's "Saranggola" won both Best Performance by a Group and Best Musical Arrangement.
